Decks in Quebec, as many of you know, are hard to maintain. A deck's large horizontal surface gets worn by the varied weather we get here and it's hard to keep it looking good from year to year. I don’t believe in starting deck work too early in the spring for the obvious reason...moisture. At first glance and even to the touch, it looks and feels dry, but I assure you, the wood is still too wet inside. The best time to do deck work is from late May until mid fall. I feel the best jobs start with the preparation. Whether I pressure-wash or machine sand your deck to bring back the wood’s vibrancy before staining, you can’t expect the new stain to last if it’s going on top of an old, peeling paint surface. Also, I believe in using top of the line products; Sikkens, Cabot and Flood are three products I use for semi-transparent wood imitation colour. For a solid stain, I suggest Flood and various other highbred stains that are environmentally friendly and formulated for today’s ever-changing weather.
